The son of a Pittsburgh police officer, Joseph A. Wambaugh Jr. became one of America's most famous cops and a bestselling author who redefined police fiction. Before Wambaugh, cops were usually depicted as figures of irreproachable moral authority. But Wambaugh knew better--he'd been with the LAPD for more than 10 years, starting as a patrolman, by the time he published his first novel, The New Centurions, in 1971. Wambaugh's characters were human beings with frailties, fears, and foul mouths, sworn to protect a citizenry that didn't necessarily want them around. If the New Centurions managed to survive as long as Bumper Morgan of The Blue Knight, they'd have amassed a career's worth of petty bribes and flawed heroics, too.

Wambaugh's first nonfiction book, The Onion Field, about two young cops' fateful encounter with two young robbers, was a huge success. After Wambaugh left the LAPD in 1974, his work, beginning with The Choirboys, became fiercely and darkly comic. In novels like Floaters and The Golden Orange, he regales readers with tales of tough-talking cops in glittering, corrupt Southern California. He also continues to write nonfiction, such as The Blooding about the first murder case solved by genetic fingerprinting. Wambaugh and his wife Dee live in Rancho Mirage, California.
