The Firm is a Grisham-novel adaptation that actually works. Based on one of the impossibly prolific author's better, less formulaic earlier novels, The Firm is the story of the Faustian bargain a young lawyer is forced to confront as he is indoctrinated into a clanlike, high-powered Memphis law firm.
Tom Cruise heads up a stellar cast that includes Gene Hackman, Hal Holbrook, Gary Busey, Holly Hunter, Wilford Brimley, and Jeanne Tripplehorn. Director Sydney Pollack's (Absence of Malice, Tootsie) slow pacing works well here, and he derives real suspense from the story's somewhat obvious moral about the evils of modern corporate law.
