Maybe it's the smoldering, heavy-lidded eyes, or the way you can read the deepest torment on his brooding face. Al Pacino's best performances are those in which his passions are in conflict with his conscience or with each other, as with his reluctant don in The Godfather or his explosive loser in Dog Day Afternoon. His appeal as a romantic lead is electric but slightly off kilter--witness his downbeat, lovelorn cop in Sea of Love. In his later years, he's gone entertainingly over the top (Devil's Advocate), but those conflicting passions play out in virtually every role. Hoo-ah!
