Considering how much of his current fame rests on providing the literary basis for a pair of famous Merchant/Ivory films and another by David Lean, one might be disappointed that E.M. Forster chose to avoid the question of whether cinema was good or bad for the world of letters in this 1927 collection of Cambridge lectures. Forster, with genteel good humor, opens instead by comparing his English contemporaries unfavorably to the Russians, and comes close to predicting the rise of both the Existentialists and the Beats in his conclusion. And his unlikely defense of D.H. Lawrence would seem to prompt another look at Forster's own novels as well.

Collection of literary lectures by E.M. Forster, published in 1927. For the purposes of his study, Forster defines the novel as "any fictitious prose work over 50,000 words." The seven aspects offered for discussion are the story, people, plot, fantasy, prophecy, pattern, and rhythm. The author compares the form and texture of the novel to those of a symphony. As for subject, he expects the work "to reveal the hidden life at its source." Human nature, he concludes, is the novelist's necessary preoccupation.
