Elmore Leonard was bitten by the writing bug in 1935. Inspired by All Quiet on the Western Front, he wrote a World War I play and staged it in his fifth-grade classroom. As Leonard matured, he spent more time reading than writing, earning his college degree in English and philosophy.

After school, Leonard began working for an advertising agency and buckled down on his fiction writing again. He stayed at the ad agency for about 12 years, during which time he sold thirty short stories, five novels, and two stories to Hollywood. He started his career as a novelist by writing Westerns, mostly because he liked Western movies. He had to work as a freelance technical writer for several years before he could afford to write fiction full-time. But his switch to modern suspense eventually gave birth to Stick and LaBrava. Finally, Glitz, considered his breakout novel, hit the bestseller lists in 1985.

To research his novels, Elmore Leonard maintains close relationships with police departments. In the interest of efficiency, he maintains full workdays, writing from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Noted for his strong dialogue, Leonard admits that he is constantly eavesdropping on the people around him and writing down what they say. Leonard himself is the subject of a 1989 biography, Elmore Leonard, by David Gehein, as well as the focus of a 1991 BBC documentary, Elmore Leonard's Critical Records.
