Bill Cosby's entrée to the comedy stage came in the form of his hilarious remembrances of his boyhood in Philadelphia. His vivid and animated storytelling brought to life memorable characters, such as Fat Albert and Weird Harold, and family members, such as his brother, Russell.

Although he is associated hand-in-glove with television, Cosby started his career on the comedy circuit, headlining in Las Vegas before he ever turned to the tube to make a living. But in 1965, he broke new ground when he became the first African-American man to star in a network TV series, I Spy. In the early '70s, Cosby first became involved in TV programs for kids. He developed the animated series Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids and regularly contributed his talents to such education programs as Electric Company and Reading Rainbow. His Jell-O commercials are regarded as advertising classics, with Cosby behaving like a big kid himself.

Cosby's greatest TV success came in 1984 with the debut of The Cosby Show. For eight seasons, the fictional Huxtable family faced universal family issues such as broken curfews and the stress of a two-career marriage. Cosby's real-life marriage has lasted since 1962, and his wife, Camille, has had a profound influence on his life. He sometimes wears a T-shirt, emblazoned with the message "Camille's Husband." Cosby has admitted to having had an affair with the mother of Autumn Jackson, who was convicted in 1997 of trying to extort $40 million from the entertainer. Also in 1997, Cosby's only son, Ennis, 27, was shot to death in California when he stopped to change a tire on his car.
