Deepak Chopra Complete Bookshelf
With Reviews and Reader Comments

Deepak Chopra has a medical background, but he doesn't have patients--he has followers. Chopra's readers learn that physical well-being is influenced and shaped by the mental and spiritual states and that meditation and natural remedies must be part of any healing program. He embraces the principles of Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of holistic healing--not a popular approach within conventional medical circles of which Chopra was once a member.

His father, Krishan Chopra, was an Indian army physician and his brother, Sanjiv, eventually became a professor of medicine at Harvard University. In high school, Chopra found that he had a knack for writing--and then surprised his parents by asking to go to medical school. He says his decision was inspired by reading such books as Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis.

Chopra did very well as an up-and-coming endocrinologist. He moved to the United States in 1970, where he practiced successfully for 14 years. In 1985, he was named chief of staff at Boston Regional Medical Center in Stoneham, Massachusetts. However, Chopra's health was not perfect as he was addicted to caffeine and nicotine and also drank alcohol. After reading a book on transcendental meditation, Chopra took his own health in hand. He began to meditate and research Ayurveda, and within a few weeks, he had stopped his unhealthy habits. Chopra found success outside conventional medical circles as he continued his meditation and started writing books and lecturing about the mind-body connection. While many of his colleagues look askance at Chopra's theories, the health guru's philosophy attracts millions of readers and Hollywood stars.
