If a poet is qualified by her trials and triumphs, it is no wonder that Maya Angelou stands as one of the best known of the day. Not only did she read a poem, "On the Pulse of Morning," at President Clinton's first inaugural ceremony, she also has had success in the fields of acting, songwriting, and public speaking.

Maya Angelou was raised as a member of a poor family in rural Arkansas. She has shared her life story in five volumes, beginning in 1969 with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Throughout her life, Angelou managed to preserve hope and optimism, despite growing up amid heartache and abuse. At the age of seven, she was raped by one of her mother's boyfriends, who was ultimately found beaten to death. After that, she did not speak for five years and retreated into the world of books--the start of her lifelong love of literature. When she was a young mother, Angelou worked as a madam in a whorehouse; one of her boyfriends even forced her to work the streets for a short time. Angelou's first foot out the door of despair was into the world of dance and drama. (Among her acting roles is Anna, the master quilter, in the 1995 film How To Make an American Quilt.) She also wrote music for bluesman B.B. King and collaborated on a CD with the singing duo Ashford & Simpson. She produced screenplays and became a respected scholar. But Angelou is primarily a poet, as most of America discovered when she stood before the nation on Inauguration Day in 1993. "On the Pulse of Morning" is a hopeful call to unity, using the metaphor of a new day to communicate the spirit of renewal.
