The rugged life and times of Ike and Tina Turner are the subject of this powerful film, which is based on Tina's memoir of the same title. Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne are outstanding as the rock 'n' roll couple, whose partnership is traced from Tina's adolescence through their violent marriage and eventual breakup. The film has its share of brutal moments--Ike's subjugation of Tina at every opportunity, as she remembers it, is not a pretty picture--but this is also much more than a black-and-blue, movie-of-the-week weepie. Director Brian Gibson effectively recreates some important chapters in rock history through which the Turners passed, including Tina's collaboration with Phil Spector and the band's charged-up contribution to the flower-power era.
