Why we wrote this book. . .
Bob Engberg and I discovered the original John Muir Alaskan letters on microfilm and found them to be more candid and eloquent than his overwrought and more famous TRAVELS IN ALASKA. We selected the best parts (comments on missionaries, Indians, growing frontier towns, gems of nature description) and added annotations which relate it all to what a contemporary visitor to southeast Alaska will see. Included is a chronology of Muir's 1879-80 Alaskan trips, so that one could retrace his canoe voyages (by kayak?). In a review of our book, ALASKA magazine said: "Muir traveled to Alaska with a copy of Thoreau's WALDEN. Today's travelers have the advantage of adding LETTERS FROM ALASKA to a copy of WALDEN in their luggage."
