Beautiful, determined, talented, and intelligent,
Olivia de Havilland--older sister of Joan Fontaine--was cast as
Hermia in the 1935 A Midsummer Night's Dream while she was still
in college. A contract with Warners found her playing the striking
love interest in adventure films directed by Michael Curtiz (Captain
Blood, The Adventures of Robin Hood). Olivia
De Havilland quietly lobbied for the role of Melanie in Gone
with the Wind, and her resulting Oscar nomination earned her more
diverse roles at Warners until a litigious breakup placed her
career in her own hands. The consequence was two well-deserved
Oscars by the end of the '40s (for To Each His Own and The Heiress),
followed by intermittently rewarding projects through the 1980s
both in film and television. Olivia
de Havilland films include
Gone With The Wind
To Each His Own
The Heiress
Captain Blood
The Adventures of Robin Hood
The Strawberry Blonde
The Dark Mirror
