Eternal Berliner, cinematic siren, Marlene Dietrich
was a largely self-invented icon whose persona combined sexuality,
glamour, and a steely core of intelligence and wit. Trained by
the legendary Max Reinhardt, discovered for the world by Austrian
émigré director Josef von Sternberg, who presided
over her own emigration to Hollywood, Marlene
Dietrich built upon a historic string of von Sternberg features
that established the actress's mystique. She would go on to work
with a pantheon of great directors, including Ernst Lubitsch,
Billy Wilder, Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, and Orson Welles,
in later years retiring from film to emit her sultry, self-mocking
appeal as a nightclub performer. Marlene
Dietrich films include
The Blue Angel
Destry Rides Again
Blonde Venus
Scarlet Empress
Witness for the Prosecution
The Devil Is a Woman
Shanghai Express
Touch of Evil
