Ruby Dee grew up in Harlem and began her acting career
with the American Negro Theatre. She made her professional stage
debut in 1946 and drew notice in films playing the wife of the
titular hero in The Jackie Robinson Story. Ruby
Dee projected intelligence, sensuousness, and seriousness
of purpose, and as the years passed she appeared in a number of
films concerned with issues of race in America (Raisin in the
Sun, Do the Right Thing). Such roles have reflected the longstanding
commitment of Dee and her husband, actor Ossie Davis, to civil
rights causes, but the actress has also appeared in a variety
of serious dramas (The Balcony) and comedies (Buck and the Preacher).
