Incandescent. Radiant. No critic or fan can describe
the beloved Swedish-born actress without resorting to such effusive
praise. She possessed an unparalleled beauty both ominous and
compassionate that threatened to overshadow her immense acting
talent. But her talent did shine through, and she was honored
as Best Actress for her roles in Gaslight in 1944 and Anastasia
in 1956, and as Best Supporting Actress in Murder on the Orient
Express in 1974. It's hard to imagine now, given the Babylonian
excesses of Hollywood, but her 1949 love affair with Italian director
Roberto Rossellini scandalized the world and nearly derailed her
cinematic career. She continued to deliver incendiary performances
late into her life--her star turn as Golda Meir in A Woman Called
Golda occurred just before she succumbed to cancer at 67.
