A vital force in American film, John
Ford would deserve a place on any Mount Rushmore of towering filmmakers.
An extra in The Birth of a Nation, Ford was still active throughout the
'60s, ultimately amassing credits for over 130 movies, both silent and with
sound, and plenty of critical laurels (including four Oscars for directing,
more than any other director). The edgy human dramas of his '30s output
gave way to the more epic scale and location settings of his '40s classics,
including seminal Westerns that helped redefine the genre with a mythic
consciousness and a new maturity. In the process, he also invested his frequent
star, John Wayne, with a defining persona. John
Ford's films include:
The Searchers
The Grapes of Wrath
Stagecoach
My Darling Clementine
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
How Green Was My Valley
The Quiet Man
The Informer
The Last Hurrah
