Critically at least, former race-car driver Victor
Fleming was always a bridesmaid, never a bride, despite directorial
credits for two of the greatest films in one of Hollywood's greatest years--1939's
double-barreled triumph of Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. From
his work as cameraman for directors Alan Dwan and D.W. Griffith, he graduated
to directing Douglas Fairbanks, signaling Fleming's
successful career in silent pictures, and going on to become a model of
pre-auteur efficiency. The tumultuous backstage machinations that yielded
Gone with the Wind, with dethroned director George Cukor coaching its two
female principals after Fleming
took over, may have undercut Fleming's stature, yet his tenure at MGM was
marked by enough other hits to confirm his talent.
