An essayist and novelist, Nora
Ephron received an Oscar nomination for her debut screenplay (a collaboration),
Silkwood. Her scripts for When Harry Met Sally... and the autobiographical
Heartburn paved the way for a rocky but enjoyable directing debut, This
Is My Life, followed by the megahit Sleepless in Seattle. Ephron's
films tend toward scattershot ideas and occasionally crumble altogether
(Mixed Nuts), but she offers unique characters to strong actors (Tom Hanks,
Julie Kavner, John Travolta), and they reward Ephron with magnetic performances.
Her You've Got Mail (written with sister Delia Ephron) displayed a newfound
storytelling discipline, and is very good as a result.
