Perhaps the Russian tradition's most brooding composer, Alfred
Schnittke (1934-1998) was also one of the 20th century's great know-it-alls.
He was able to quote liberally from myriad sources, providing his pieces
with a collage feel that he referred to as "polystylistic." His
string quartets are aching in their patient detail--even poking a bit of
fun at themselves. And his large works were equally well-dotted in every
way with details, as well as great splashes of dissonance. Here
are his essential recordings.
