Purcell (1659-1695) was a successful composer for church, court,
and commercial theater, a renowned countertenor, and a keyboard virtuoso
(and he lived only to age 36!). No other composer has set English texts
more naturally. His music has a tremendous emotional range and is by turns
stately, jubilant, solemn, humorous--even frightening. Here
