The Who Recommendations

For the first half of the 1970s, the Who were among the most significant rock & roll bands. Boasting three dynamic personalities in guitarist Pete Townshend, vocalist Roger Daltry, and drummer Keith Moon (with bassist John Entwistle serving as a sturdy hitching post to which the others tethered), the mod champions of the three-minute single in quick order became popularizers of the concept album and one of the era's biggest stadium draws. No major band more heartily explored the tension between the music's extremes; the Who trapped intuitive and artful impulses in one highly combustible unit for longer than anyone expected. Here are their essential recordings.
