Howlin' Wolf Recommendations

Perhaps the most colorful character among a generation of monumental bluesmen that included Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Willie Dixon, the man born Chester Arthur Burnett made music that delivered what his ferocious nom de plume promised. Though he didn't become a full-time performer until he was in his late 40s, Howlin' Wolf quickly ascended from West Memphis, Arkansas, roadhouses to Memphis and Chicago recording studios, earning fervent followers in the 1950s and '60s with his inimitable vocal growl and a customized repertoire that included "Three Hundred Pounds of Joy," "Built for Comfort," and "Wolf Is at Your Door." Here are his essential recordings.
